Summer research scholarships

Summer research scholarships 2012 - 2013

The ANU College of Law is one of Australia's leading law schools. Established in 1960 as the Faculty of Law.

The ANU College of Law is the 7th oldest of Australia's 29 law schools, and has produced graduates who are now leaders in their chosen fields all over the world. Located in the national capital, seat of the national Parliament, the Federal Executive, and the High Court, the ANU College of Law is, in a sense, Australia's 'national' law school.

A Summer Research Scholarship includes:

  • return travel from a student’s place of residence to the Australian National University;
  • accommodation and all meals on campus from late November 2012 to late January, 2013;
  • a weekly stipend;
  • an opportunity to work with leading scholars in their area of expertise; and
  • a full-program of social activities available on weekends and weeknights.

If a scholar wishes to remain on campus over the Christmas break, they must request this at the time they complete their residential form. Up to three Summer Research Scholarships will be offered this year. Additionally, up to two Summer Research Internships will be offered.

Summer research internships 2012 - 2013

All current ANU College of Law students who apply for a Summer Research Scholarship will also be considered for the alternative program, the Summer Research Internship (no additional application is required). The Summer Research Internship at the ANU College of Law is similar to the scholarship in that it offers the same weekly living allowance, but it does not offer any funding towards travel or accommodation, because typically, current ANU students are already located in Canberra. Internship recipients participate in all of the Summer Research Scholars social activities, and also have the same opportunity to work with leading scholars in their area of expertise.

Instructions to applicants

In addition to completing the online application form, all applicants are required to prepare a statement which responds to the following questions:

  • What interests you specifically about this project?
  • How would this project add to your existing education and experience?
  • What (if any) other commitments will you have over the summer? (Summer Research Scholars may be expected to keep regular working hours.)

Upon arrival, applicants will be expected to develop a timetable in consultation with their supervisor. Applicants may also be asked to prepare a research output (such as a 5,000 word research paper or a number of shorter legal memoranda) and to present their research findings to a small group of peers at the end of their tenure.
