Master of Legal Studies

The Master of Legal Studies (MLegStudies) program is available to non-law graduates who hold the equivalent of a three-year Australian Bachelors degree.

Students are able to select from a range of foundational courses in areas such as government and commercial law, environmental law, and international law, which provide pathways into more advanced and specialist areas of study.

The Master of Legal Studies is ideal for students wishing to gain a broad understanding of key legal principles and concepts in fundamental areas of the law.

Graduate Diploma in Legal Studies

If you're not quite ready to commit to a Masters program, you might want to begin with a Graduate Diploma in Legal Studies. Once you've completed 36 units (in 6 unit courses) you'll have the option to upgrade to a Masters if you decide you'd like to do further study.

Courses

Students have the freedom to choose courses from any specialisation area. You will be required to take Fundamentals courses as prerequisites for more advanced courses.

Program details

The Master of Legal Studies requires completion of 48 units (8 courses).

The Graduate Diploma in Legal Studies requires the completion of 36 units (6 courses).

Entry requirements

Non-law graduates must hold at least a three-year Australian Bachelors degree or equivalent. A strong pass degree or better is normally required for admission.  Applicants who do not hold a bacheors degree but who have relevant experience may be considered for admission however there are additional entry requirements. Your convenor

Donald R Rothwell is Professor of International Law at the ANU College of Law and Director of the Masters Program. His research addresses many intersecting areas of international law with a specific focus on law of the sea, law of the polar regions, and implementation of international law within Australia.

He also teaches a range of courses in the Environmental Law, International Law, and International Security Law programs, including Law of the Sea, International Dispute Resolution, International Humanitarian Law, and Marine and Coastal Law.
