Applying for leave without pay
Staff may apply to their relevant delegate for a period of leave without pay (LWOP) up to twelve months. These delegates are: College General Manager for professional staff and College Head for academic staff. For periods of LWOP greater than twelve months the application will be submitted via your delegate to the Director HR for approval. The staff member must submit a statement of the circumstances with their application for leave without pay.
Leave without pay is not an entitlement and the delegate may attach conditions to any period of leave without pay.
Applications will be considered on their merits, but at all times approval will be subject to the business needs of the area.
Staff are required to submit a paper application for leave form in advance of the leave being taken.
The following applies to LWOP applications
1. Annual leave usage prior to LWOP
LWOP can be granted only after all annual leave has been exhausted.
2. Long service leave usage prior to LWOP
Any long service leave entitlement may be required to be taken before commencing leave without pay as a condition of the leave of absence.
3. Room allocation
All academic and professional staff will be required to empty and vacate their office if LWOP is for a period of 12 months or greater. If LWOP is less than 12 months the room must be left in an orderly manner for the use of visitors to the College as required.
All equipment purchased with University funds must be returned to the College.
Staff members are to return all keys to the Services Office before commencing LWOP.
6. Purchase cards
Purchase cards must be surrendered to the ANU College of Law Finance Unit if LWOP is greater than three months.
7. Staff resources
Staff do not have access to staff allowance, administration support or any other College services while on LWOP.
